5 Signs Your Garage Door Springs Need Replacement

Your garage door springs do the heavy lifting — literally. Torsion and extension springs counterbalance the door's weight so it opens smoothly and safely. When they wear out, the door can become dangerous. Here are five signs it's time to call a pro before a spring snaps.

1. The door feels heavy to lift manually

Disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway by hand. A properly balanced door should stay put on its own. If it slams down or flies up, your springs are likely worn or broken.

2. A visible gap in the torsion spring

Look at the spring above your door. A healthy torsion spring is a continuous coil. If you see a visible gap — usually 1–2 inches — the spring has snapped and needs immediate replacement.

3. A loud bang from the garage

When a torsion spring breaks it releases all that stored energy at once, often with a bang loud enough to sound like a firecracker or a gunshot. If you hear this, stop using the door and call for same-day repair.

4. The door opens unevenly or jerks

Worn springs struggle to balance the load, causing the door to open in jerky movements or sit crooked in the opening. This strains your cables and rollers and can lead to a bigger repair.

5. Your door is over 7–10 years old

Garage door springs are rated for a finite number of cycles (typically 10,000–15,000). In a busy Fort Collins household that's roughly 7–10 years. If yours are older and you've never serviced them, it's smart to replace them before they fail.
